Mavoko municipal Council was started way back in 1964 as an urban council. Before it was part of the larger Nairobi County Council. Mavoko falls within Machakos District.
The Town came into existence through trading with the main business activity being centered at the old town area next the railway station.
The name Athi-River changed to Mavoko in 1990. The Council was upgraded from urban to town council in 1987 and in 1990 it became a municipality.
The Council being a service provider operates under the Local Government Act. The Council has core functions of planning all development activities within its area of jurisdiction. And therefore the need for a comprehensive Master Plan.
